Goliath’s Sword. David asked Ahimelech, “Do you have a spear or a sword at hand? I did not bring either my sword nor any other weapon because the king’s mission had to be done in haste.” The priest answered, “The sword of Goliath, the Philistine whom you killed in the Valley of Elah, is here. It is wrapped in a cloth behind the ephod.[a] If you want it, take it, because it is the only one here.” David said, “There is none like it, give it to me.”

10 That day David rose up and fled because he was afraid of Saul. He went to Achish, the king of Gath.

  1. 1 Samuel 21:9 Ephod: a vestment worn by a priest and apparently large enough to harbor Goliath’s sword. We do not know how it came to be there or why David, who slew the giant many years before, did not know of its whereabouts.
